What is Comprehension?
Comprehension is an active process where the reader or listener interprets and constructs meaning about what he or she reads/listens to based on prior knowledge about the topic, thereby making connections between the old and new.
Good Comprehension Skills:
- Your child reads materials from beginning to end.
- Your child slows down his/her reading with they come to important information.
- Your child can anticipate the content of a book based on prior knowledge.
- Your child can reflect on ideas by creating summaries of a book.
- Your child may refer to the text for important information.
- Your child uses multiple strategies to help them understand a book and can describe them to you.
